Cupid's Span
Cupid's Span is a large outdoor sculpture that resembles a giant bow and arrow, with Cupid's bowstring fully drawn. The sculpture features a massive, painted fiberglass bow, measuring approximately 60 feet in length, and a shiny, stainless steel arrow that extends into the ground at an angle.
Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, the renowned husband-and-wife artistic duo, are responsible for creating Cupid's Span. They are well-known for their large-scale sculptures of everyday objects.
The sculpture is strategically placed along the San Francisco waterfront, offering breathtaking views of the Bay Bridge and the San Francisco Bay. It sits in Rincon Park, making it a popular landmark for both locals and tourists. The park provides a pleasant setting for picnics and leisure activities.
Cupid's Span was unveiled in 2003 and was commissioned by the city as part of a public art program designed to enhance the urban environment.
The sculpture is said to symbolize San Francisco's reputation as a city of passion and romance, with the bow and arrow of Cupid serving as a playful representation of love and attraction.
