Old Saint Mary's Church
Old Saint Mary's Church is a historic landmark that holds a significant place in the city's history. Its story is deeply intertwined with the growth and development of San Francisco over the years.
The church was established during the mid-19th century, a time when San Francisco was undergoing rapid expansion due to the California Gold Rush. The city's population surged, drawing people from all corners of the world seeking their fortunes in gold. It is at 660 California St, San Francisco, CA 94108.
In 1849, just a year after the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill, the Catholic community in San Francisco saw a need for a new church to accommodate the growing population. Under the leadership of Archbishop Joseph Alemany, plans were set in motion to construct a new church. The cornerstone for Old Saint Mary's Church was laid on July 17, 1853.
Designed in the Gothic Revival style by architect Charles H. Poole, the church stood as a symbol of faith and resilience amidst the rapidly changing city landscape. Its majestic architecture and towering spires became a focal point in the burgeoning cityscape. Its interior boasts stunning stained glass windows, intricate woodwork, and beautiful religious artworks, adding to its allure. When it opened, it was the tallest building in San Francisco and all of California.
It was used from 1854 to 1891 as a cathedral and was replaced by the first Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, as the archdiocese was in need of a larger space for the growing number of Catholics in the area. In 1891, Old Saint Mary's became a parish church, still using the same name that it bore as a cathedral.
Over the years, Old Saint Mary's Church witnessed many significant events. It survived the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fires that destroyed much of the city. The church served as a place of refuge and hope for the displaced and suffering residents during those tumultuous times.
Beyond its religious significance, Old Saint Mary's Church also played a role in various social and cultural movements. It served as a gathering place for community meetings, discussions, and events aimed at social justice and advocacy.
Today, Old Saint Mary's Church stands as a cherished historical landmark in San Francisco. It continues to serve as an active parish, welcoming worshippers and visitors from around the world.
