Ingleside Terraces Sundial

Ingleside Terraces is a neighborhood located in the southwestern part of San Francisco, known for its unique architectural design and the iconic sundial that stands as a centerpiece within the community.

In the early 20th century, a real estate developer named Joseph A. Leonard had a vision of creating a suburban residential neighborhood that would offer a peaceful retreat from the bustling city life of San Francisco. Leonard, inspired by the English garden city movement, envisioned a planned community that would incorporate green spaces, wide streets, and distinctive homes.

In 1911, Leonard purchased a large parcel of land and began developing what would become Ingleside Terraces. He hired architect Joseph Stadler to design the neighborhood, incorporating elements of the English garden city concept. Stadler's plan included tree-lined streets, spacious lots, and homes featuring a variety of architectural styles, including Tudor, Spanish Revival, and Arts and Crafts.

The centerpiece of Ingleside Terraces is the striking sundial, in Entrada Court, which was completed in 1913. It was dedicated on October 10, 1913, the same day as the "meeting of the waters" in the Panama Canal.  The gnomon is 28 feet long. The shadow of the gnomon moves one inch per minute on average, but only 1/2 inch per minute from 11 A.M. to 1 P.M.

The sundial served both a practical and aesthetic purpose. It not only told time using the sun's position but also became a focal point for residents and visitors, symbolizing the community's emphasis on harmony and the passage of time.

Over the years, Ingleside Terraces has retained much of its original character and charm. Residents take pride in their neighborhood's history and architectural heritage, preserving its unique features, including the iconic sundial. The sundial and park is a San Francisco City Landmark.
